Somerton Man: This day in 1948...

December 1st. 1948

On this day 67 years ago and at around this time in the morning, the body of the Somerton Man was found.

Regardless of the differing views that exist as to the circumstances surrounding his death, I think that all commentators would agree that the day should be marked with respect for him and for all those who have dedicated so much time and effort into trying to resolve the case.

This man was someone's child, he had a mother and father and possibly siblings. He learned to walk and say his first words, he jumped in muddy puddles and played the games we all played as children. He went to school and possibly University. He had a job, maybe a wife and children. He was just like each of us in many ways.

How would you like to be remembered? Buried as an 'Unknown' person? Or would you like to think that, if this were you, one day someone would find the answers and see that you were named and perhaps taken to your home and your final resting place.

For me, in my heart my wish is that the day when he is finally named happens soon, perhaps even in the next 12 months.

But for now, I'll raise a glass and say 'Here's to you SM!'

  1. Hi Gordon, Couldn't agree more with your comments. The sad thing about all this is that is name/origin is known, and in a file somewhere, gathering dust. Clive
